A polícia malawiana deteve segunda-feira onze antigos ministros e altos funcionários do governo, incluindo o irmão do falecido Presidente, Bingu wa Mutharika, acusados de alta traição.
O grupo teria tentado prevenir que a antiga vice-Presidente malawiana, a incumbente Joyce Banda, assumisse o poder depois da morte de Wa Mutharika, em Abril de 2012.
Entre os detidos esta o antigo Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, Peter Mutharika, irmão do falecido Presidente Mutharika e seu aparente herdeiro.
Uma fonte policial malawiana revelou que os outros detidos são os ex-Ministros para os Governos Locais, Informação, Finanças e Desportos e altos funcionários do governo de Mutharika.
O Ministro da Planificação Económica no governo de Banda também está entre os detidos.

O Ministro da Informação malawiano, Moses Kunkuyu, revelou que não se trata de uma questão política ou que tenha algo a ver a Presidente Banda, mas sim um problema nacional.
A detenção do grupo causou uma onda de choque em vários pontos do Malawi contra o governo da Presidente Banda, não obstante elogios que tem vindo a ser alvo pela comunidade internacional.
A polícia usou gás lacrimogénio para dispersar manifestantes que protestavam em frente do comando da polícia de Blantyre.
Os protestos ocorreram também noutras cidades malawianas, incluindo Lilongwe, a capital.
