Can you tell us about a riot situation where they used real bullets?

On the day we went to steal votes in Nampula in 2014. At the Belenenses School, 12 of October Secondary School, Secondary School of Nampula, we were flying with SISE men, men dressed in suits. Men who have braids, the plebian type, they are assigned specific tasks. (They say) you go there to create confusion because Renamo has influence. For us to be able to shake things up, first our colleagues in civilian clothes had to go there, those who had braids and torn clothes, they went to stand in line and instigate, “Frelimo must lose here”, they said and while some will say that you purposely created confusion, it is very easy to agitate Macuas (tribal affiliation for the majority of the population in northern Mozambique). Then they called us (FIR) and said come here.

The Rapid Intervention went there as a legitimate defense and to maintain order. Tear gas and smoke, it was dark, we took the ballot boxes in armored vehicles and we went to deliver them to SISE men who filled out (the ballots) with Frelimo, Frelimo … While at the school we continued to shoot. Then the cars left and went into the middle of the confusion while they were still there filling out (the ballots). OMM (Mozambican Women’s Organization), those ladies are cunning. They were there at the headquarters of the Rapid Intervention in Nampula filling out Frelimo, Frelimo … there were people who were brave and then the commander said now hit four for them to see this thing is serious.

Tem reconhecimento que ficam de tranças, tipo marginais, foram atribuídos tarefas vocês vão para lá fazer confusão por que os da Renamo têm influência. Para nós conseguirmos sacudir aqueles primeiro tiveram que ir lá colegas à paisana, que tinham tranças e roupas rasgadas, foram formar bicha e instigar, «a Frelimo aqui tem que perder » diziam e quando outro queria responder então armava-se confusão, é muito fácil de agitar macua. Depois ligaram-nos e disseram venham lá. Aí foi a Intervenção Rápida numa de que é legítima defesa e está a ir manter a ordem. Gás lacrimogéneo e fumaça, aquilo ficava escuro, levávamos as urnas nos blindados e íamos entregar homens do SISE que preenchiam Frelimo, Frelimo... Enquanto lá na escola continuávamos a disparar. Depois os carros saiam e entravam no meio da confusão enquanto eles estavam ali a preencher. OMM aquelas senhoras são malandras, estavam lá no quartel da Intervenção Rápida em Nampula cheias a preencher Frelimo, Frelimo... houveram pessoas que se fizeram de corajosos e aí o comandante disse agora batem quatro para eles verem que a coisa é séria.
