Mozambique's ruling Frelimo party has expelled Albino Bie, who was the head of the party's Organization, Training and Staff department in the southern province of Gaza province, accused of "too close links" with the former rebel movement Renamo, reports Thursday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".
In addition to his alleged links with the Renamo leadership, Bie was denounced for "constant violations of the party's statutes", The decision was taken during a meeting of the party's provincial committee, over the weekend, that saw in Bie's activities a scheme to undermine Frelimo in Gaza, the province where the ruling party is at its strongest. In the three multi- party general elections (1994, 1999 and 2004), Renamo has never managed to win a single parliamentary seat in Gaza.
Commenting on the expulsion, the Frelimo first secretary in Gaza, Jose Tsambe, said that Bie was several times reprimanded for being too close to Renamo leaders but, instead of correcting his mistakes, he even strengthened those contacts, which led to the belief that he was trafficking information to the opposition.
"Our suspicions were confirmed", claimed Tsambe. "Bie never distanced himself from the Renamo leaders. He systematically violated the party's statutes and ethics, which culminated with his expulsion", said Tsambe.
Bie has been a Frelimo member for quarter of a century. He joined the party in January 1981 and was put in charge of the communal villages in Chibuto district. In the same year he was appointed head of the members' registration sector in the same district and, in 1990, he was transferred to the provincial committee, as chief of that same sector.
In 1997 he was appointed head of the Organization, Training and Staff department in the Provincial Committee, where he remained until his expulsion last weekend.
Tsambe accused Renamo of trying to compensate for its weakness in Gaza, by trying to win over key Frelimo militants.
"Bie was one of the victims", he said.
Nota:
