Police Send Chokwe Complaint to Court

Maputo — The Mozambican police have remitted the case of the attack against an office of the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) in the southern town of Chokwe to the local court, Radio Mozambique reported on Friday.
The attack occurred at about 02.00 on 13 September, the first day of campaigning ahead of the 28 October general elections. The attackers arrived in two vehicles decorated with flags and posters of the ruling Frelimo Party. They smashed windows in the MDM office, stole goods that were inside, and injured three MDM members, one of whom needed stitches in his forehead.
The MDM said local Frelimo members were identified among the assailants, including the son and father-in-law of the mayor of Chokwe, Jorge Macuacua.
Reacting to the attack, the Frelimo Central Committee Secretary for Mobilization and Propaganda. Edson Macuacua, said Frelimo would investigate, and if any Frelimo members were found to be involved, disciplinary measures would be taken against them. But nothing has subsequently been announced as to the outcome of this investigation, and although the police have sent the MDM complaint to the court, there are no reports of any arrests so far.
