Students Expelled for Sexual Assaults

The director of education in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane, Pedro Baptista, has ordered the expulsion of ten students from the Eduardo Mondlane Industrial and Commercial School in Inhambane City for sexually assaulting first year students during "initiation ceremonies", reports Friday's issue of the independent weekly "Savana". The ten are accused of forcing several male first year students to practice anal sex. Initially the school management only expelled four of the culprits - but Baptista insisted that all ten must leave.

"We cannot tolerate this kind of immorality", Baptista told the paper. "It's true that the school only decided to expel four, but I thought immorality of this sort deserved tougher measures".

The school director, Estevao Nhanombe, said the four he had expelled were chosen because they were repeat offenders.

"We had already identified this group and warned them several times", said Nhanombe. "We warned them one day, and the very next day they did the same thing".

The reports concerning the repugnant rites imposed upon first year students say that their assailants went to their bedrooms at night, woke them up, and took them into the city in the middle of the night. They were forced to take their clothes off, beaten, and sometimes forced to run through the streets naked.

After tiring out their victims, the older students arranged them in pairs, and forced them to have anal sex with each other.

Sources in the students' residence say that these humiliating practices have been going on for years, but until now the school authorities had done nothing about them.

One student told "Savana" that the school management acted this time because the victims threatened to go to the police.
